Some kids want chocolate behind every Advent-calendar door. Others would rather find something they can poke, build or figure out. This one is for that second group.

Uncommon Goods’ Experiment A Day Science Advent Calendar costs $40 and turns the Christmas countdown into 24 science activities. The retailer recommends it for ages 8 and up, with experiments spanning chemistry, biology and physics.

There’s one important catch before you wrap it: the box includes most of the materials and tools, not absolutely everything. Some experiments also need ordinary household items. Check what’s required before opening a day’s activity with a kid who is very ready to start.

This is a hands-on countdown rather than 24 finished toys. That makes it a different kind of gift: something to do as December unfolds, not just something to collect.

It also isn’t a toddler calendar. The listing warns about small parts and says it is not for children under 3; the recommended starting age is still 8. Follow the instructions supplied with the kit.

The calendar is listed for purchase now. Check the current price and delivery estimate for your address before ordering, especially if you want it there before December 1. For other kinds of countdowns, our Advent calendar guide covers beauty, food, LEGO and more unusual options.
