Your pets are like family and when I was a kid, the only pet I grew up with was a fish named Goldie.

While Goldie was very cute, I always wanted a dog like every other kid on the planet. Since I never got to have one of my own, I’m the auntie to almost all of my friend’s dogs.

So if you love pet, (which I’m 1000 percent sure you do) the FDA has published a “pulling on the heart strings” type video on YouTube.

However, this video should be taken seriously and is a cautionary PSA for pet owners regarding the virus. Here’s what you need to know.

One of the main points to take away from this video, is the risk of spreading the virus to your pets. As of right now, the risk of your pet spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 in people is low.

However, the FDA says that people can give the virus to animals, which means social distancing applies to your pets and not just the people in your home.

“Though it doesn’t seem like animals can give you the virus, it appears you can give it to them. So if you’re sick, avoid direct contact with your pets. If possible, have someone else care for them until you’re well again, stated the FDA in the video.”

The FDA also suggests that your pets should not come into contact with anyone outside of your home.

The FDA has stated that cats and ferrets are more likely to contract the virus than dogs. So, here are a few precautionary steps to keep in mind as a pet owner.

  • Keep cats indoors
  • Walk dogs on leashes and keep them 6 feet apart from others
  • Avoid dog parks or other crowded areas when walking your pet
  • If you contract the virus, avoid direct contact with your pet and if possible, have another caretaker provide for your animal. Wear a face mask and wash your hands frequently, if you have to interact with your pet.

So while you keep up with social distancing and good hygiene, make sure to follow these precautionary steps to keep your beloved pet in a healthy and safe environment.
