Grizzly Bears in Canada are nothing new or out of the ordinary. But a White Grizzly bear is very much unique and out of the ordinary. It’s also very beautiful to see!

Rim Rock Resort in Banff, Canada added a video of bears to its Instagram account on April 29th, 2020. In the video you can see that one of these bears is not like the others, it is totally white!

A regular Grizzly Bear, like we are all used to seeing is a very large brown bear. Now, the brown can vary in shades from light to dark brown, but the color is most definitely brown for a Grizzly Bear. So seeing a white Grizzly Bear is very rare!

Bow Valley Network shared a video of the rare white Grizzly BEar on May 18th and asked its Facebook followers to vote on a name. They decided on “Nakoda the White Grizzly.”

Nakoda is a name originally from the Indigenous people of Banff. The name means ‘Friend’ or ‘Ally’ in the native language of the three aboriginal tribes of the area—Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Wesley.

Nakoda isn’t the only famous bear in the area! There is also a bear named “The Boss” that is a 660-pound male, and “Split Lip” who is known for eating other Grizzly Bears, eek!

Nakoda is a very special bear and as always, if you see it in the wild, do not disturb it by getting too close. We all want Nakoda the White Grizzly to eventually become Nakoda the ‘Great’ White Grizzly of Banff National Park area.
