A ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ Musical Is On The Way And I Can’t Wait

Way back last century — nearly 40 years ago — there was birthed a cult-classic film called Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

It was cheesy, it was predictable, and it was perfect.

If you haven’t seen it, it stars a young Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker.

It is a fun little slice of the 80s that you don’t want to miss.

Well, hold onto your lace gloves, chunky neon earrings, new wave hairstyles, cassette tapes, and jelly shoes.

There is a Girls Just Want To Have Fun musical in the works, and it is going to be saturated in all things 80s.

And, I can’t freaking wait!!

Girls Just Want to Have Fun centers on Janey (Sarah Jessice Parker), a talented, rule-abiding high school gymnast who moves to a new town and starts disobeying her father. At the encouragement of wild girl Lynne (Helen Hunt), she starts acting out and (gasp!) enters a local TV dance competition.

The Girls Just Want To Have Fun musical is a collab between Private Wave and Lively McCabe Entertainment.

Private Wave owns music from the likes of Prince, Olivia Newton-John, Boy George and Culture Club, Air Supply, and Devo — so you know the music in this musical is going to be rad.

According to Broadway, this musical will “be based on the film’s screenplay by Amy Spies and will feature a score of ’80s hits, including the one made famous by Cyndi Lauper that inspired the title.”

It just might be time for a trip to New York to catch the opening of Girls Just Want To Have Fun the musical!
