There’s another Disney recipe up for grabs and my stomach is growling!
The meal combines sweet with savory and is one of the most oldest recipes on the menu at Disneyland, since 1967! In fact, the recipe is so popular that Disneyland used to hand out index cards to the public, sharing their secrets in whipping up the meal! Sadly, they don’t do this anymore, but…!
Thanks to the official fan club of Walt Disney, D23, they’ve released both the current and old recipe on their website, and we are here to share the magic with you.
We all know that sharing is caring, especially when it comes down to diving into Disney’s recipe books!
It’s called the Monte Cristo Sandwich and it’s served at the Blue Bayou restaurant and Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square!
Here’s how you make it, but first, let’s tackle the most current recipe used at Disneyland today. Here is what you’ll be needing…
- 1 Egg
- 1 3/4 cups, plus 2 tablespoons of water
- 1 3/4 cups of All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 teaspoon of Salt
- 1 teaspoon of Baking Powder
- 8 slices of egg bread (Challah bread works well too), sliced 1/2-inch thick
- 8 thin slices of Ham
- 8 thin slices of Turkey
- 8 thin slices of Swiss Cheese
- 3 cups of Canola Oil
- Confectioners Sugar
- Blackberry Preserves (for the sauce)!
1). Line a cookie sheet with paper towels and set aside.
2). Whisk the Egg and water together in a mixing bowl. Add your Flour, Salt, and Baking Powder and whisk thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth.
3). On one slice of bread, add 2 slices of Ham, Turkey, and Cheese. Placing another slice of bread on top, slice each sandwich in half diagonally.
4). Heat the oil between 365 degrees F and 375 degrees F in a 10-inch pan.
5). Dip half of your sandwich into the batter, allowing the excess to drain, and very carefully, place into the oil. Repeat with the other half of the sandwich.
4). Cook 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Place your cooked sandwich on the prepared cookie sheet in a warm oven until your ready to serve. Repeat these steps with the other three sandwiches, making sure you only cook one sandwich at a time.
5). Sprinkle with Confectioner’s Sugar and serve with Blackberry Preserves on the side for sauce!
Doesn’t that sound absolutely appetizing!
Now let’s move on to the second recipe, and we have the index card here, to create some nostalgia!
- 1 1/2 cups of All-Purpose Flour, sifted
- 1/4 teaspoon of Salt
- 1 Tablespoon of Baking Powder
- 1 1/3 cups of water
- 1 Egg
- 1 ounce of sliced white Turkey meat
- 1 ounce of sliced Swiss Cheese
- 1 ounce of sliced Ham
- 2 slices of white bread
1). Start off by sifting your Flour, Salt and Baking Powder together. Add water to beaten egg, then add to flour and mix well. Set aside.
2). Make your sandwich using first the Turkey, Swiss Cheese and then Ham.
3). Cut the sandwich into quarters, using toothpicks to hold the sandwich together.
4). Dip the sandwich in the egg batter and fry in 360 degrees F oil until golden brown.
5). Remove toothpicks and sprinkle with Powdered Sugar and serve with Raspberry Jelly on the side for your sauce!
Now that we’ve covered both recipes, I’ve got some serious cooking to do, I’ll be back later!
