I’ll admit. My go-to order at McDonald’s is a 4-piece Happy Meal, double fries, small drink.

I mean, it’s the perfect amount of food for me.

But, turns out McDonald’s employees aren’t too pleased when adults order the Happy Meal.

You’d think it would be just like ordering any other item of food, but I guess it’s not.

Why McDonald’s Employees Don’t Like Adults Ordering Happy Meals

First of all, the Happy Meal is a bit more labor intensive than a regular menu item.

They have to get the box, make sure all the items get in the box, add the toy, seal the box.

It takes a bit more time and thought than just throwing a meal in a bag.

If you go through the drive-thru to order your meal, it adds a whole new layer to ordering.

There are a series of questions that the person taking the order has to go through — What side do you want? What drink do you want? Do you want a 4-piece or 6-piece Chicken McNugget box? — and they can’t move on until these questions are answered.

Oftentimes, the customer at the window isn’t speaking loud enough, and the person taking the order has an even harder time getting through their questions.

Then there is the whole Happy Meal toy.

A lot of times, the adult is ordering the Happy Meal purely for the toy, but that can present a problem.

Toys are only available for a limited time, and they can vary between locations.

That means, the toys aren’t always available, or the toy the person wants isn’t available.

The customer will spend time at the window trying to trade their toy, and that will hold up the entire drive-thru line.

Don’t be that person.

If you are going to order a Happy Meal, make the ordering process as painless as possible.

How To Order A Happy Meal For An Adult

First, and possibly most important, if you are at the drive-thru, speak up and make sure you are speaking clearly.

Know exactly what you want to order before you get to the window.

4-Piece McNugget, 6-piece McNugget, hamburger, cheeseburger — know before you go.

Also, be prepared with what you want for your sides and drink. It will make the process go much more smoothly.

Now, the hot topic — the toy.

As they used to say at my child’s preschool, “You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit.”

Speaking of toys, did you know you can order JUST a toy?

Don’t do it in the drive-thru! Go inside.

They will be much happier to work with you during non-peak dining times.

And, as always, make sure you pack your smile and friendly voice. Remember, these are actual human beings you are dealing with, and they will be much more apt to work with you if you are nice.
