The Medical Examiner Indicated Additional Investigations Are Required To Determine Matthew Perry’s Cause of Death
You’ve likely heard by now the sad and upsetting news of Matthew Perry’s death.
Ever since his death was announced, fans have posted theories online as to what may have been his cause of death.
At this point in time, nearly every cause is just rumors because the medical examiner is the one who determines the cause after an autopsy is conducted on the deceased.
Surprisingly, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed Matthew Perry’s autopsy has been completed but says an additional investigation is required to determine his cause of death.
His death has been listed on the online record as “deferred” and his body is “ready for release” to his next of kin.
Um, what can all of that mean?
Well, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office guidelines:
“In cases where the cause of death cannot be determined at the time of autopsy, a deferred certificate will be issued until additional studies have been completed,”
A law enforcement source told CNN that no foul play is suspected but other reports are saying the cause of death is pending toxicology results.
The pathologist can sometimes determine the cause of death right after examination. Other times, the pathologist needs to have more tests done. In that case, the County will issue a deferred death certificate. Due to the thoroughness and quality of our lab testing, and significant increase in drug deaths in Los Angeles County during the past couple years, toxicology testing can be a lengthy process. Currently, toxicology results can take between four to six months.
Once the additional testing is completed, the pathologist can amend the death certificate, if needed, with the final cause of death.

In this case, that means it could take several months before we know the real cause of his death.
This one just hit my heart hard. RIP Matthew – you will be missed!
