When They See Us premiered on Netflix on May 31, 2019 and according to Netflix, it has been the most-watched series in the US every day since.
Let that sink in. That is a lot of people watching this series.
That tells you two things:
- It is a really good series.
- It touches some really hard subjects that have touched many hearts and minds.
And yes, this series certainly nails both of those things.
When They See Us is about:
Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise. Beginning in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series will span 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.
People have all sorts of feelings towards this series. Mostly upset over what happened and how the justice system failed these young boys.
Others also expressed sorrow and outrage but also expressed how good the series was.
Honestly, it’s good to see a series like this get so much publicity and praise. We need to bring awareness to these sort of things so hopefully nobody ever has to go through this again (wishful thinking).
