This Supermarket Just Added GPS Trackers to Meat Packages Due to Theft and I Have So Many Questions
Shoplifters, things are going to be a bit harder for you at one specific supermarket!
Due to rising theft occurring in grocery stores, a supermarket has decided to do something more… maybe even a bit extra to deter the theft of meat from its stores.
The store is now using GPS-tracked polycarbonate security cases on expensive meats. This will help reduce the theft that has amounted to millions of dollars.
If a shoplifter leaves the store with an expensive steak shoved in their purse or down their pants, the case will send an alert to the store.
The case has GPS, so the customer with the stolen meat can be tracked.
Each case costs $32 and is removed at checkout just like what is done with most electronics, or security tags on clothing.
The director, John Paul Drake, of the supermarket chain, told 7News that 12 million dollars worth of meat is stolen each year!
It is a large number so to put these measures in place, I feel they are needed … stealing is not an option, and you shouldn’t be stealing from anywhere
Drake said to 7News
Drake also said that the police believe the thieves are trading the stolen meats (which can cost up to $100 per 1 kilo or 2.2 lbs) for drugs and other items.
As of right now, this is a pilot program that is being tested in 2 stores, and they expect it to expand it to all stores. Right now it is used on the most expensive products such as Wagyu.
The chain is called Drakes Supermarkets and is located in Australia. But I bet you anything this will be coming to a city near you in America soon.
I’m not sure if Australia has easily accessible food banks as we do here in the States. Are they stealing because they are starving? I highly doubt it though since they are stealing the most expensive grocery items they can.
