Apparently, this has been a thing for many years and the majority of people I have talked to know about this easy snack and ate them as a kid.

However, some were just as confused as I am but I have to say, I’ve tried it and it is DELICIOUS.

Well, whether you’ve tried it or not, Buttered Saltine Crackers have made a comeback as an easy and tasty snack you make it just seconds! Seriously, you need to try these!

Oh, and while you are at it, give our Christmas Crack a try (you can enjoy it anytime of the year).

Now, some people have even said you can flip the cracker upside down so the salt side hits your tongue and the other side is covered in butter. That is also delicious.

You can even put these on a cookie sheet and bake them for a few minutes to make them warm and then apply the butter so it’s a bit melty.

I have to say, I am sad that I just learned this tasty snack but I am so glad I did!

  1. My grandma used to eat butter crackers with the canned peas on top

  2. We always ate coffee and crackers. Butter the saltines and put them on a plate, sprinkle with some sugar. Pour coffee with milk in it over the crackers and enjoy! I think this idea came from WWII when so many things were rationed.

  3. Mmm. These must be served alongside chili. Preferably on the coffee table in front of the fire on Friday night.

  4. And, did you know half a package of saltines dry, no additions, is an excellent treatment for a hangover.

  5. I am 77 and have been eating saltines with butter since I was a kid. We had them with chicken noodle soup, too. Also put peanut butter and marshmallow fluff on and make a saltine sandwich.

    1. @Dawn, with chicken noodle soup is the best!! One of my favorite food memories from 50 years ago.

  7. Can’t believe it’s necessary to print a recipe for buttering a saltine cracker. What simpletons have we raised?

    1. @a Long, look, dear, I’m sure nobody NEEDS the instructions. I have never, in my entire life, met someone who would have needed these instructions (not even among the young people!). They were probably listed because this is supposed to be a recipe blog.

  8. I’ve been eating buttered crackers close to sixty years now. Recently we tried flavored butters, honey, cinnamon or garlic flavored types. We love Land of Lakes brands, but any ole off brand is just as tasty. Oh soooo good!

  9. My grandmother (1921-2007), my mother and (now I) ate/eat buttered saltines in their parenting (aka kids at home) years. What is sad is how you had to make blog post about it.

  10. I’m 76 and we had the Graham crackers with frosting. My sister out of the blue when she was little decided they were “tailgunners.” Our mother had no idea where she came up with that. ut that has been their name since then in our fanily.

  12. This author is seriously an idiot.

    1. @Rain is the new way to get wet,

It takes a certain kind of poorly raised human to make statements like this, any time, anywhere.

    2. @Rain is the new way to get wet,

Wasn’t that a bit harsh? Perhaps at least attempt to think about the ramifications of a post.

  13. Kick it up a notch and do honey butter on saltines

    1. @Patricia Vanden Dungen,
I kick it up with a slice of cheese! Cheddar, American, Swiss, havarti!!! The possibilities

    2. @Patricia Vanden Dungen,

This would take away from the savory joy of salted butter! My only recommendation is to add a slice of quick pickled red onion. Very midwest Scandinavian.

  14. My husband is 80 and has been eating them like that forever.

  19. We have to remember that Millenials and GenZ like to take credit for anything that Baby Boomers and GenX’rs have been doing for years. Also many in this group don’t have alot of common sense and need simple things spelled out for them. :):) 🙂

    1. @Jen, hahahahaha yes, tell the more please,, this have been the ultimate breakfast for puertorricans for like a whole century!!! please

  20. Where do they come up with these things? When did you learn this? Really weird been doing a lot of these things for the 60 years. This new generation must really he bored.????????

    1. @Brenda, not bored, they just like to take credit for anything that Boomers and GenX’rs have been doing for years.

    2. @Jen, I’m pretty sure this whole article is satirical, so it appears there’s nothing to be stolen, besides a few laughs at people taking this too seriously. Plus, millennials and gen z are not the first generation to spin an old story/recipe/song into something new. Just curious, how could’ve the article been changed so you would not feel that the younger generation stole a recipe from the elders?

    3. @Jen, We sure do enjoy taking credit for the messed up economy boomers left behind for us LOL

  22. Nothing new at all! You must have been living under a rock or something. LOL like many have said already – we grew up eating this snack and so did our parent and grandparents. 23. You need grandparents to have discovered this? Wait what? Lol…. ? this has to be a joke right?
