People Are Wanting To Make January 17th National Betty White Day And We Are Here For It
Betty White’s 100th birthday was supposed to be on January 17th, but life had other plans.
We are so sad that she didn’t quite make it to 100, but that shouldn’t stop us all from celebrating her big day.
People on Facebook are wanting to make January 17th — her birthday — National Betty White Day, and I think that is a fabulous idea!
January 17th is MLK Jr. Day This Year
Now, let me preface this by saying that I am well aware that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is on January 17th this year. I don’t think we should detract from that day at all, but MLK Day is a floating holiday. We celebrate it every third Monday in January.
I see several work arounds here. MLK Jr.’s actual birthday is on January 15th. We could totally make that a standard celebration of reverence day for such a great man.
OR — since it’s a floating holiday — MLK Jr. Day won’t occur every year on the 17th. Just some years.
If the days bump up against one another, it’s double the reason to pause and remember. To celebrate all the good things and kindness to others.
Both days are to remember someone who was kind hearted and strong in their own way. The days would really compliment each other.
Make January 17th Betty White Day
I love that Facebook is calling for a day to remember our Betty White — someone who was (and IS) a national treasure.
It is your goal [throughout] the day to do two things. First of all to be randomly kind to everyone you see… everyone. And lastly to do it with a laugh and a smile. Just a day where we intentionally spread kindness while being a little goofy while we do it. I think she would have liked that.

I don’t think Dr. King would disapprove — I mean, that’s just my opinion — but I think he would welcome a day where we celebrate peace, love, and a little laughter.
Even if Betty White Day doesn’t become a national holiday, it should still be a recognized day when we pay all the kindness forward, tip a little better, drive a little nicer, wait in line a bit more patiently, say our “pleases” and “thank yous” a bit for freely.
And, of course, do it all with a smile.
National Days Every Year
There are already TONS of “National” days that we celebrate every year that aren’t necessarily recognized as national holidays — Valentine’s Day, for one.
And, every single day of the year there are multiple “National” days that fall on the same exact day, and they are still recognized. Heck — THREE “National” days already fall on January 17th this year.
National Bootlegger’s Day
National Hot Buttered Rum Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Third Monday in January

Why not add Ms. Betty White Day to the list!!
For realz — if there can be a National Spaghetti Day, a National Winnie The Pooh Day, and a National Blueberry Cake Day, there can surely be a National Betty White Day!
How To Celebrate National Betty White Day
We’ve already talked about the kindness with a smile angle, and that’s big. Do EVERYTHING with kindness that day, and always with a smile. You can throw in a little humor for good measure.
Just off the top of my head, here are a few other things we could do.
- Binge watch episodes of Golden Girls
- Eat some cheesecake — I’m SURE Betty would approve.
- Don’t eat anything green — she joked that she didn’t.
- Drink Vodka and Eat Hot Dogs — because that’s what she did!
- Watch a Robert Redford movie — her favorite.
- Watch ANY of her many movies — I recommend the Proposal.
- Volunteer at a dog rescue — she loved animals.
- And above all, just be happy.
Happy birthday Betty white
