Apparently, Sperm Whales Dive 45 Feet Into The Ocean And Sleep Vertically Just To Take A Nap
Whether or not you sleep on your belly, on the side, or you back, did you know that sperm whales dive about 45 feet into the ocean just to take a nap?
Talk about some serious peace and quiet.
According to a 2008 study that documented the whale’s behaviors, when sperm whales feel the desire to take a nap during the day, the sea animal takes a deep breath, dive 45 feet down into the ocean and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns.
They sleep in this position for sometimes minutes and even hours; can you imagine not moving even in the slightest position during the entire night?
Not to mention, sperm whales always use the buddy system and make it a habit to sleep in large groups for protection.
Thanks to French photographer Stephane Granzotto, who happened to come across several sleeping whales in the Mediterranean, his photography showed the unique and quite possibly bizarre sleeping pattern of sperm whales back in 2017!
I don’t know about you, but it’s nearly impossible for me to stay in one position all night long.
