This Viral Video Will Show You How Much Dirt And Food Particles Are Living In Your Wooden Utensils
TikTokers, young adults, moms and dads are rethinking their utensil choices in the kitchen after one video that has reached the phone screens of many.
Bonnie McNamara, a student who specializes in cleaning on TikTok shows just how clean your wooden spoon from the kitchen may or may not be.
After placing her own wooden spoon in a clear glass, she then poured hot water onto the spoon and into the glass.
What comes next is disgusting.
Seconds after pouring hot water over the spoon, the water in the cup turned brown including pieces of previously-embedded food that floated to the top of the cup, gross!
Based on the comments, many TikTokers were very grossed out considering an average looking spoon that looked clean on the outside was in fact very dirty on the inside.
After some research and watching what surfaced in the cup of water, McNamara told Insider during an interview that she has ultimately decided to switch to silicone spoons!
However, Kelly Doran of Mrs. D’s Cleaning Reviews says that if you’re going to stick with your wooden spoons, Doran recommends to clean your wooden utensils regularly and thoroughly.
Doran specifically told Insider to rinse your wooden spoons immediately after being used and to keep it out of the dishwasher.
“Once you’re ready to clean it, all you need to do is use warm water and mild dish soap,” she said. “When you have finished washing it, dry with a clean kitchen towel and leave to air dry, Bonnie McNamara told Insider.”

Along with using warm water and mild dish soap, a trick to get rid of stubborn stains is by sprinkling some salt while rubbing the wooden spoon with half a lemon, Doran explained to Insider.
The only criticism Doran has against McNamara’s cleaning video is to not soak your wooden spoons for no longer than 20 minutes, as it can wear down the quality of your spoon.
