Here’s How You Can See The ‘Wolf Moon’ and First Full Moon Of The Year
The first full moon of 2021 is nearly here! If you are a stargazer like me, then this is one you’ll want to be sure to see.
This full moon is called the Wolf Moon. But why is it called that?
Early Native Americans and Europeans categorized lunar cycles by naming them after other occurrences that would happen at the same time. This time of year is when wolves howl more often, hence the name Wolf Moon.
Wolves howl more in the winter for hunting communication and finding members of the pack. In the past, it was thought they were howling more because they were hungry due to hunting being harder during winter.
How to view the Wolf Moon
Thankfully, those of us in North America will have the best view of the Wolf Moon. The best day for viewing will be January 28th, 2021.
The best time to view it is in the moment between moonrise and sunset. You can check your sunset times locally and plan from there.
Also, ‘The Old Farmer’s Almanac‘ has a calculator that helps you find the exact moment for best viewing from your area. Let’s hope it’s a clear night so that we can all enjoy the Wolf Moon.
