World’s Most Adorable Unicorn Donuts

When my kids asked for a snack, I seriously had no idea what I was going to make.

They wanted “something new” and “something we’ve never had before.

I don’t know where they get these ideas…

But, when I came up with a plate of the world’s most adorable unicorn donuts–they were super excited, to say the least.

And me? I was kind of excited, too, because these are surprisingly easy and fun to make!

I just made a really simple donut batter.

Now, I used our little donut maker, because I have one.

But if you don’t have a donut maker, you can just use a donut pan in the oven–just bake for about 8-10 minutes at 350-degrees.

Once the donuts were done, it was time to turn them into unicorn donuts!

I melted about a 1/2 cup of white chocolate morsels in the microwave on one-minute increments, then dipped one side of the donuts into the chocolate.

While the chocolate was drying/cooling on some wax paper, I let my creative juices flow!

To really make these unicorn donuts, they needed a horn.

So, I grabbed some yellow Starburst candies and popped them in the microwave for 5 seconds to make them a little malleable.

I used 1/2 of a Starburst for each unicorn donut.

To make the horn, I started by rolling 1/2 Starburst candy into a tube/snake.

Then I folded that in half–but that’s all I did. I didn’t mash the two halves together or anything, just folded.

That’s important for the next step.

Because I just mushed the end and twisted up to the top–this is what creates the swirly horn look.

Isn’t it fab?!

I was so impressed, I thought about stopping there.

But why stop when you can add flowers?!

Just 1/2 of each of the orange, pink and red Starburst candies, rolled into the tube and then curled into a flower made such a cute bouquet under the horn!

And I simply couldn’t stop there.

So I grabbed a little tube of black sparkle gel icing and drew on some closed eyes onto our unicorn donuts.

Now, I did practice a few times before I did the drawing–freehand is hard.

I recommend you do the same. LOL!

From there, it was time to get our snack on!

And I just could not have been more impressed with how these unicorn donuts turned out.

I seriously feel like, if we do a unicorn party in the near future, that these will feature in our unicorn treats.

Or if we have a reason for another special snack. LOL!

Ingredients

  • Donuts
  • 2 cups baking mix I used Bisquick
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 2 tblspn sugar
  • Icing:
  • ½ cup white chocolate morsels
  • Starburst candies 12 in each color
  • Black GEL icing in a tube

Instructions

  • Preheat mini-donut maker (you can also cook in a donut pan at 350-degrees).
  • Combine baking mix and coconut milk with a hand mixer until smooth. If it’s too thick, add one milk by 1/3 cup increments, stirring between, until you reach pancake batter consistency.
  • Spoon into your mini-donut maker or donut pan. If baking, place in the oven for 8 minutes or until browned.
  • Remove from the donut maker when slightly browned and the donut maker opens without tearing the donuts. Set aside to cool to the touch.
  • Melt chocolate by placing it in a microwave-safe bowl and microwaving them in 30-second increments, stirring between.
  • Dip one side of each donut in the chocolate and set aside to harden. You can place them in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to speed this process.
  • Unwrap and microwave yellow Starburst candies, working with 1 at a time, for five seconds.
  • Tear the Starburst candy in half, then mash the Starburst candies into a long tube by rolling it between your hands.
  • Fold the tube in half.
  • Smush one end of the folded tube between two fingers, twisting the remaining and shaping it into a slight cone, making a horn.
  • Mush this gently onto a donut on one side, pointing outward.
  • Repeat making a horn for every donut.
  • Unwrap and microwave pink Starburst candies, working with 1 at a time, for five seconds.
  • Tear the Starburst candy in half, then mash the Starburst candies into a long tube by rolling it between your hands.
  • Roll the tube up into a spiral, forming a flower
  • Mush this gently onto a donut, at the base of the horn.
  • Repeat making a pink flower for every donut.
  • Repeat steps above for making an orange and red flower for every donut.
  • Using your black GEL icing, draw on a closed eye and eyelash on each side of the donut hole on each donut.
  • Serve immediately or refrigerate.
