This Teacher Resigned During A School Board Meeting And She’s My New Hero
Amanda Coffman, an 8th grade teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District in Kansas, just resigned her job in the middle of a School Board Meeting, and I am so proud of her!
The teachers have been in negotiations with the district for MONTHS about workload and salaries in their contract negotiations.
But, according to Ms. Coffman, when the teachers showed up to negotiate, the district didn’t even have a representative. They just sent their lawyers.
Amanda said, “Teaching is like a bad marriage. You never get your needs met, but you stay for the children.”
She went on to say, “Our communication has broken down. YOU AREN’T LISTENING.”
As part of her speech at the School Board Meeting, she spoke directly to her students, saying, “Just because you Can, doesn’t mean you Should.”
She went on to say to the students, You have to learn to “Walk Away.” She said, “Respect is owed to you as a human being,” and obviously she felt she wasn’t getting that respect from the school district.
At the end of her speech, she just abruptly said, “There are no clarifying questions. I don’t answer to you anymore,” and she walked off — to much applause from the audience.
You can watch the entire speech below. The fun begins around the 42:40 mark.
