The Extra $600 Unemployment Benefits Have Expired. Here’s What Happens Next.
If you are one of the many on the unemployment list, and you have been getting that extra $600 a week, I have some disheartening news for you.
Those unemployment benefits expired on Friday, and Congress went home without agreeing on a new plan.
Because they let the $600 a week plan expire, that means you are going to be without any extra benefits for the foreseeable future.
Apparently, Republicans wanted to offer an extension on the benefits, but Democrats rejected that idea, saying that an extension wouldn’t have worked.
Even if Congress goes in today, and agrees on a new deal — the Republicans want to make it $200 a week, the Democrats want to make in $600 per week — there will be a waiting period, while all the red tape and other behind the scenes stuff happens.
According to Yahoo Money, it will take AT LEAST 5 weeks before any kind of benefits could be reinstated, which is NOT good news for so many people.
After Congress passes a deal, the Department of Labor would have to issue regulations that states implement. Each step of that process — starting with deadlocked negotiations — will require time.

This means that most of the unemployed people will be making anywhere from a half to a quarter of what they were making just last week.
So, while Congress is in a stalemate between the Democratic proposal and the Republican counterproposal, we are all stuck in limbo. *Sad Face*
We will keep you updated on the situation as we learn more.
