It is hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that dogs are born at “breeding facilities” that sell them strictly to research facilities, but it happens.

What happens when there is a surplus of doggos? You don’t even want to know. They simply euthanise the extra dogs they don’t need.

That is exactly what was going to go down at one Virginia breeding facility. That is, until Homeward Trails Animal Rescue jumped in to save 400 “surplus” beagles.

During the pandemic, Envigo — a breeding company based in Cumberland, Virginia — found themselves with too many dogs. 400 Too many dogs to be precise.

They were all set to just destroy the dogs, which were “no longer for sale,” but that is when Homeward Trails Animal Rescue stepped in.

Homeward Trails agreed to take on the responsibility of the 400 dogs, and find them loving, forever homes. Envigo was okay with this agreement, because they no longer had to deal with the “surplus” dogs.

Homeward Trails has chosen to play the role of trusted partner, working in collaboration with the facility to secure a positive outcome for the dogs they can no longer use in their programs. We have already taken several dogs ourselves, all of whom have been adopted and will continue working with them in the coming weeks and months to take others. We are grateful to be able to offer adoptive homes to these dogs.

As you can imagine, finding space for 400 dogs is a daunting task, but not one that executive director, Sue Bell, even had to think twice about.

While certainly a monumental task, this is not something I had to think about for more than a second before agreeing. It is truly an honor to be able to give these dogs the lives they deserve.

Through their hard work and tremendous efforts, Homeward Trails has already found temporary homes for over 300 of the adorable beagles.

Why temporary homes? Unfortunately, Homeward Trails can’t take care of an extra 400 dogs at their facility. They have worked tirelessly to find shelters and foster families that can care for these dogs until they can be adopted out.

That is so sweet!! These little fur babies get the love and attention they need, all while waiting for their forever families to love and care for them.

Can You Adopt One Of These Puppies Bred For Research?

That is a question that I can’t answer straight away.

I would ASSUME that Homeward Trails is looking to place all these dogs, so they would love to entertain the idea of letting you adopt one of them.

BUT, I’m not sure about all their rules and regulations.

Adopting a pet is a SERIOUS COMMITMENT. We strongly encourage anyone thinking about adding a fuzzy member to their family to do their research and be ready for this commitment — Homeward Trails Animal Rescue will work directly with you, the prospective adopter, providing individualized attention and support in order to help you find the perfect pet for your family.
