An Asteroid That Looks Like It’s Wearing A Face Mask Is Approaching Earth
An asteroid that was discovered in 1998, will be approximately 4 million miles away from Earth this Wednesday at 5:59AM ET.
The space rock has a name and it’s called the 1998 OR2. It’s not the prettiest looking name but hey, lets not question it.
Although 4 million miles away, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico was able to capture the latest picture of the asteroid and what you see might come as a shock.
Or maybe not considering it seems to resemble what most people are practicing here on Earth.
Coincidental? Some people are saying the asteroid looks like it’s wearing a face mask, but that’s up to you to determine!
Personally, I think yes and it’s kind of freaking me out!
“The small-scale topographic features such as hills and ridges on one end of asteroid 1998 OR2 are fascinating scientifically. But since we are all thinking about COVID-19 these features make it look like 1998 OR2 remembered to wear a mask, said Anne Virkki, Head of Planetary Radar at Arecibo Observatory.”
Anne Virkki, Head of Planetary Radar at Arecibo Observatory, said in a statement.
Even though the asteroid is not expected to impact Earth, it’s classified as a “potentially hazardous” asteroid due to its diameter being more than 500 feet and closer than 4,650,000 miles to planet Earth.
“Although this asteroid is not projected to impact Earth, it is important to understand the characteristics of these types of objects to improve impact-risk mitigation technologies, said Anne Virkki, Head of Planetary Radar at Arecibo Observatory.”

So it looks like it’s safe to say we will all be just fine! We don’t need any more trouble down here, NO JINX!
