I Just Finished The Entire Series Of ’13 Reasons Why’ And I Have Mixed Feelings About It
Everyone at this point has heard of 13 Reasons Why. And most have a pretty strong opinion about the show.
From what I’ve seen, half absolutely love the series and half are completely against it. I just wrapped up the entire series, and I really don’t know how to feel.
I happen to like the show myself. But there are countless trigger warnings within the series to where I’m not sure if I would suggest it to someone.
Between rape, murder, drugs, school shootings, and death, watching this show can make you feel some very uncomfortable things.
That being said, all they are doing is depicting things that are happening every day in our world that others have chosen not to think about. And that’s fine. But I chose to be aware of the world today and not only watched the series, but the documentary and researched things as well.
These are issues that are faced every single day and that people, especially parents, need to be aware of. Thankfully, Netflix started posting warnings at the beginning of each episode and released a lot of statements warning parents of what their children would be watching, so I applaud them for that.
This last season really got to me though. Spoiler alert coming up so if you haven’t seen it yet, I’m about to ruin some things for you…
Seriously, don’t keep scrolling unless you’re like me and actually like such things revealed ahead of time.
In this final season, there was an entire episode about school shootings.
Now, they wanted to make you believe that someone was the shooter and even did a foreshadowing with a funeral scene, but ultimately, it was just a drill and everyone was safe. But the intensity of the episode even had my heart pumping.
The entire season is focused on Clay and Jessica having panic attacks and seeing dead people, hearing voices, and doing things without any recollection.
Being someone who deals with anxiety, this hit home for me. But it also triggered my anxiety a few times while watching. So be careful.
Overall, I think they wrapped up the series pretty well. Yes, there were deaths, yes there were heartfelt speeches that got kind of close to being cheesy, but after 4 seasons, I think they did a pretty great job of staying on course of raising awareness of the daily struggle with teens.
