Every year, the Oxford University Press, the publishers behind the Oxford English Dictionary, choose a word of the year — a kind of theme, if you will, for the year.

Some previous words of the year have been vax (2021), COVID (2020), climate emergency (2019), and toxic (2018).

They have just announced the word of the year for 2022, and I’m going to be honest, I haven’t heard it before.

But, I’m definitely going to add it to my vocabulary in the future.

What is the word (or “words” as the case may be)?

Goblin Mode

As in, “My husband lives his life in Goblin Mode 24/7.” LOL!

What does Goblin Mode mean?

The official definition of Goblin Mode is “unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.”

So, if you let your household chores slip, you ditch out on self care, you sleep in ’til all hours of the day, you forget to sweep your floors, you let your dishes pile up in the sink, you kick your shoes off when you walk in the door, or you sit and do nothing but binge watch your favorite show for hours on end, you might be living in Goblin Mode.

According to CNN, Goblin Mode is “the opposite of trying to better yourself.”

The days of keeping journals, ritualistically waking up at 5am, drinking that disgusting green smoothie for breakfast, and that goal you have of reading a non-fiction book every week just might be on their way out.

People are simply too stressed and simply DONE with the last few years of living their lives in self-improvement mode, and they are slipping into Goblin Mode to retaliate.

I have to admit. I’m guilty of living my weekends in Goblin Mode.

In fact, if you were to come into my house right now, you might think a goblin has been hanging out and ransacking the place.

Goblin Mode is a real vibe, and we are all feeling it!

What do you think of the Oxford University Press word of the year for 2022?

I kinda like it. Goblin Mode describes it perfectly!
