A lunar eclipse is when the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth. It only happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are completely, or very closely aligned, and Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. We will have a lunar eclipse on July 4th!

The full moon will pass through part of Earth’s shadow on the 4th of July and we will have a visible lunar eclipse! This lunar eclipse can be seen in North America and South America.

This is going to be the first lunar eclipse that has been visible for North America and South America since 2019! It will be viewable by some parts of Africa and Western Europe as well.

Some things you may not remember (I didn’t), there are three different types of lunar eclipses. Those are total lunar eclipse, partial lunar eclipse, or penumbral lunar eclipse. I knew “partial” and “total” but forgot about penumbral lunar eclipses.

The eclipse we will be able to see on the 4th of July is called a penumbral eclipse. This means that the moon is only passing through Earth’s outer shadow, which is called the penumbra.

This third kind of lunar eclipse is much more subtle, and much more difficult to observe than either a total or partial eclipse of the moon. At best, at mid-eclipse, very observant people will notice a dark shading on the moon’s face.

So if you are a night owl, and plan to stay up late after the fireworks this is the treat you will find! As long as we have some clear skies that is!

You won’t need a telescope to view the eclipse. Just be sure to look up at the right time! The eclipse will happen from 11:07 PM EDT on July 4th and it will continue until 1:52 AM EDT on July 5th.

The best viewing time will be in the middle of the event. So, about 12:30 AM EDT will give you the best view.

There will be another penumbral lunar eclipse on the night of Nov. 30th, 2020. It will be visible over a larger area which includes North America, South America, Australia, and eastern Asia.
