Christmas music is my absolute favorite! I may or may not listen to it year round!

But I was today years old when I found out that the beautiful song “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” wasn’t so merry when it was originally written…

Hugh Martin originally wrote “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” for Judy Garland to sing in the 1944 film, Meet Me in St Louis. But she was not ok with singing the original, semi-depressing lyrics.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.

It may be your last.

Next year we may all be living in the past.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.

Pop that champagne cork.

Next year we may all be living in New York.

No good times like the olden days.

Happy golden days of yore.

Faithful friends who were dear to us.

Will be near to us no more.

But at least we all will be together.

If the Lord allows.

From now on, we’ll have to muddle through somehow.

So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

Honestly, I don’t blame her. I wouldn’t feel comfortable singing those to a kid either!
