Talking to friends about blogging…

So, today I was at the bounce house with Halle and a friend brought her children up there to bounce as well. We got to talking about blogs, and what made them interesting. I started thinking, and I don’t actually think my blog is very interesting, and here’s why… everyone I know has my blog address, so at any time, any of them could just type my address into their little browser, and bam… everything I have written is right there for them to read.

So, is the only way to be interesting to give your self complete anonymity? Or are you just supposed to not care if people read it? I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I would like for my blog to reflect me more…

  1. I think that you’ve hit on the secret. The day you let yourself go and write what you’re really, really thinking, the stuff that’s deep down and that you won’t talk about over coffee, that’s the day people start reading avidly.
It’s brutal maintaining that level of candor and honesty, but it’s what makes the reading really good.
My entire family (including my inlaws) read my blog, I’ve given the address to all my friends, and yes, sometimes that’s completely paralyzing. And then I make myself forget about them and I write the real stuff. Usually those are the days I get hysterical calls from everyone the next day to make sure I’m ok.

It all once blew up in my face (something about calling my dad a pathological liar, which hurt his feelings, go figure…) so now I do try to avoid writing things that will intentionally hurt someone.

  2. Hey Halle, thanks for stopping by my blog. Love the cartoon! I hear what you’re saying. I’ve considered starting another blog, without giving my name or using a photo, just so I could say somethings that are on my mind and not have to worry about who might read it and be offended, angry, embarrased, whatever.
