You know that saying “You only live once”? While that is entirely true, you do also live through your kids, grandkids, etc. That is exactly why I’ve started making small changes in my home to go green because after all, we’ve only got one Earth and unless we create some sort of time travel device to go back and correct our wrongs, we need to take care of it now. Sure, Earth Day may have passed but that doesn’t mean you can’t be proactive on going green every day of the year! So let’s talk about Easy Ways to Go Green because every little bit makes a difference! easy ways to go green

Easy Ways to Go Green

I think there is this misconception that in order to make a difference and to really help the environment you have to be an overprotected environmental enthusiast or some sort of hippy. Let me just say, I am neither of those so I know that isn’t true! You see, even small changes can really make a difference. None of that has to be too time consuming or even expensive. To give you a better idea, here are some quick and easy ways you can help you and your family go green:

Cut down on running water time- Did you know that by cutting even the 2 minutes you allow the water to brush your teeth, you can save up to 5 gallons of water a day? It’s true!

Change up those light bulbs- By changing your light bulbs to a CFL bulb, you can save about 75% of energy and over $83 throughout the life of the bulb. SCORE!

Unplug even at night- You may think that if an electronic item if off, it would stop pulling energy, right? Well, the reality is that most items pull energy even when they are turned off. In fact, the ones that have those cute little LED lights are the main culprits. Unplug devices at night from the wall or use an UL-certified power strip and turn that off to avoid pulling unnecessary energy.

Fix any windows and doors with gaps- Those areas where air is able to flow in and out of your home without your permission can actually raise your heating costs in the winter and your cooling costs in the summer. Most the time these can be fixed with weatherizing material and cut energy use and overall costs.

Recycle more and more often- Not all areas collect recycling but that doesn’t mean you can’t recycle. You can designate certain bags or garbage cans for different recyclable items (glass, plastic, paper, etc.) then call around to your local cities and see where these items can be dropped off for recycling.

Use eco-friendly products- One of the easiest ways to help the environment is to use products that are eco-friendly. Some products can contain harmful chemicals that can pollute our air and soil when they head to the trash. Look for items that are biodegradable, natural, and help promote a healthy environment for all. Tom’s of Maine is a brand that does all of this and they even have a new Made to Matter collection of products that are great examples of items to switch to.
