Yesterday was a strange day in the internet world.

Facebook went down around 11:40 a.m. Eastern time and was down for around 6 hours. Not to mention that Instagram and WhatsApp were down too.

It was so bad, Facebook employees were locked out of their offices and email services. It even caused disruption for businesses who rely on reaching customers on Facebook.

Needless to say, it was a big hot mess. So, what the heck happened?

In a statement, Facebook apologized for the outage saying:

To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by today’s outage across our platforms. We’ve been working as hard as we can to restore access, and our systems are now back up and running.

What caused the Facebook Outage of 2021?

According to Facebook:

Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.

I am no tech wizard but it sounds like that they deleted theirselves off the internet…

Well, it seems that Facebook and it’s sister apps are back up and running but oh boy, yesterday was a day.
