It seems that too many of us are falling asleep with their cell phones in their bed. Tweens and teens are especially susceptible – but we all do it.

This causes a very real danger of fire. The heat generated by the charger can’t escape in all of those covers, pillows, and sheets. It gets hotter and hotter until it eventually starts a fire.

Firefighters are issuing warnings about this very thing.

According to the Newton NH fire department’s Facebook Page, 58% of children and teens charge their phones on their bed or under their pillow.

I have to admit to being guilty of this and I am far, far from teenage. The phone gets plugged in and I listen to music or play games until I am sleepy.

We just don’t want our phones far from our side. All of my music, contacts, pictures, business apps, financials, and games are on my phone.

We carry around our lives on those phones and it can be scary to let it out of your site. There is a name for that – “nomophobia”. The fear of not knowing where your phone is.

The phones are not worth our lives though. In 2019 a 14-year-old girl was found dead after going to sleep with her phone next to her head.

The phone had overheated and exploded. Encourage your children to make sure to put their phones on their bedside tables before they go to sleep, or better yet, just leave them in the living room.

I have seen an entire house burned down from a tiny pilot light that got too close to a kitchen towel. Imagine a phone charger overheating and catching all of those sheets and your child on fire. It is such a small thing to lay the phone on the bedside table so that your family is safe.

Go talk to your kids, check where you charge your own phone and keep safe. Prevention of a fire is much easier than putting one out.
