McDonald’s just announced that they are closing more than 200 stores nationwide. I was surprised at first, but then I learned why, and it all made sense.

I don’t know about where you live, but I live in a super small town. I mean, we have a Walmart, but that’s about it.

We sure as heck have 4 McDonald’s, though. I think we have just as many McDonald’s as we do gas stations. And, in fact, one of those McDonald’s locations opened within the last year.

Now, however, McDonald’s is CLOSING locations, and they aren’t the FIRST restaurant that has announced such closings.

Sweet Tomatoes, Chuck E. Cheese’s, and Dunkin’ Donuts have all also shut down locations across the U.S., and it is due, in part, to the effects of the coronavirus.

While McDonald’s is seeing success at their locations with drive thrus, they are closing up a lot of their locations that are inside shopping malls or Walmart stores.

Any restaurant that has more foot traffic than drive-thru service is in danger of being on the McDonald’s chopping block.

Contactless service is the wave of the future, and McDonald’s is embracing this new trend. They are shifting their focus onto their stores that can offer such a feature, and letting go of locations that can’t.

McDonald’s restaurants started opening inside the Walmart’s big box locations in the 1990s, during a period of growth for the fast food company, which lasted almost 40 years. Since 2014, McDonald’s has been experiencing a steady decline in the number of locations, consistently closing a handful of restaurants every year.

So, if you like to frequent that McDonald’s that is located in your local Walmart, beware. It might be going sooner rather than later.

We don’t have word yet on exactly WHICH McDonald’s will be closing, but we will keep you updated as soon as we know.
