Recent news broke that more than two dozen shrimp products sold by popular retail stores such as Target and Whole Foods have been recalled because of a salmonella outbreak.

Nine people in four states including Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Rhode Island have gotten sick while three were serious enough that required hospitalization, according to the CDC.

Manufactured by Avanti Frozen Foods, the manufacturer has since recalled the shrimp including additional packages, sizes and brands of the frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp, including some that are even sold with cocktail sauce, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled food items were distributed nationwide from last November in 2020 and May of this year, but keep in mind that the shrimp may have been sold in stores more recently, stated the CDC.

The recalled shrimp have been sold under multiple labels while potentially tainted shrimp includes tempura rolls sold at Target stores only in California, rings of frozen shrimp distributed by Chicken of the Sea at Meijer, and bags of Meijer-branded frozen shrimp.

Since the final update tied to frozen shrimp was released in late July, three new illnesses have been identified by the CDC which has caused an expanded recall that covers,

“A large amount of product that has not been associated with any illness but [has] been undertaken following discussions with FDA and CDC,” said Avanti Frozen Foods in an announcement.

The CDC has since reopened the investigation which means clear your fridges and freezers of any recalled shrimp listed which you can find online.
