It is with a heavy heart that we must report that Irish singer, Sinéad O’Connor, has passed away.

You couldn’t have been alive in the 90s without knowing of Sinéad O’Connor.

Her song “Nothing Compares To You” was a huge hit on the airwaves, and her name became a common fixture amongst alternative musicians of the time.

In 1991, Sinéad was named artist of the year by Rolling Stone magazine, and she was truly on top of the world at that time.

She was always surrounded by controversy, including boycotting the Grammy Awards and ripping up a photo of the pope during a Saturday Night Live performance in 1992.

That last one was a true *Gasp* moment for so many people. She was apparently making a statement about child sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.

Sinéad O’Connor’s Family

Sinéad was just 56 when she passed, and her cause of death has not been released.

She is preceded in death by her 17-year-old son, Shane, who died by apparent suicide just last year.

To those of us who had the privilege of knowing her, one couldn’t but always be struck by the depth of her fearless commitment to the important issues which she brought to public attention, no matter how uncomfortable those truths may have been.

Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland

Our hearts go out to the family at this time. The musical world is a little less bright today.
