Joann Fabrics Will Give You Supplies To Make Face Masks For Nurses and Doctors
Are you a crafter or sewer? Do you live near a JOANN fabric store? If so they have an excellent opportunity to help get masks and gowns to medical workers in your area.

In a press release, JOANN stores laid out their plan to let people come into their working classrooms, and make masks and gowns for FREE, as long as you plan to donate them.

Beginning Monday, March 23, while adhering to social distancing guidelines, JOANN will open its classrooms to any who want to help make these essential items. Participating locations will offer sewing machines, materials and guidance to help customers safely make facemasks and covers, gowns and other items to donate to America’s hospitals. JOANN will provide and donate 100% of the supplies needed for these projects for those who come in to make.

Those who want to make-to-give to the effort at home will be able to take advantage of JOANN’s Ship-to-Home and Curbside Pickup options, and find tutorials to create the items at joann.com/maketogive.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country are scrambling to find enough PPE — Personal Protective Equipment — including masks and gowns to deal with this coronavirus epidemic.

This is a GREAT way to help donate to the cause! Reusable masks and gowns would GREATLY help the medical community.

All open JOANN locations will serve as collection points for those making in their homes, and all items created by customers will be donated to help medical systems extend their dwindling supplies of protective equipment, and will be used at the hospital’s discretion.
JOANN Press Release

Now, at first, I’ll admit, I wondered why JOANN fabric stores wouldn’t just provide fabric, thread, and elastic to people that wanted to make masks and gowns from home.

But, think about it. Not everyone is as honest as you and me. They could potentially lose TONS of product and money, if they just handed out free fabric and supplies.

JOANN is giving a DEEP discount on cotton fabric, and the supplies you will need to make masks at home.
Then, you just drop them off to any JOANN store, and they will have them delivered for you. It couldn’t be easier.

Interested!! Please contact me
I would love to make some for all the medical staff here etc.
This is ploy to get people in the store to spend money and have JoAnn Fabric declared as an “essential” store.
The fabric provided is inferior cotton.
The interfacing is fusible – meaning there is glue in the fabric.
We are out of elastic, so we are giving “elastic thread”!!!!
Our team members are getting sick because customers coming into the stores are or infected or have been exposed to the deadly virus!
Our counters & registers are probably infected because WE HAVE NO CLEANING SUPPLIES.
These “masks” are going to be proven harmful & unsafe once the medical & healthcare professions start wearing them and become sick from the fabric used.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT MONEY NOT ABOUT HELPING THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS!!!
I too have plenty of fabric but low on elastic. I have tried JoAnns but told you don’t have any.
I have fiddled with hair bands and ribbon combinations. And it works well as there is a good deal around the face. But my mask is much better than the one shown.
Nurses are saying the sanitation process breaks down elastic so use binding to make strings that can be “tied” behind the head, instead of elastic straps to go around each ear.
Hospitals are me are saying the sanitation process breaks down elastic so use binding to make strings that can be “tied” behind the head, instead of elastic straps to go around each ear.
Hi,
I work at a physical therapy clinic and we have been unable to get a hold of proper PPE’s,
we are taking as many precautions as we can as we continue to help/treat our patient’s, but would appreciate any mask donations or gloves.
Our clinic is Cure Physical Therapy in Hemet, Ca.
I will have 10 masks made by tomorrow I’m short on the elastic. For the other 10- 20 more . I’m in Bricktown who needs these masks?
I have left over cotton fabric which I can use but don’t have bias or elastic. How can I get it at discounted price. Also I want to ship them at NY hospital where my niece works. Do I have to ship it or you can ship it for me if I sew at home?
Why don’t you try ribbon if you don’t have bias tape?
I am a nurse and I sew as well. Would love to make me and my fellow nurses mask.
Love to help Doctors and nurses. I thought about that I love crafts and sewing sad because my machine doesn’t work is like new it sews one side good and the back is tangled. I would love to sew at home to donate
You need to ADUST your bottom mention and that will fix your problem
Diana meant to say you need to adjust your bottom Tension.
If the back thread is all tangled it is usually a bobbin problem. Take the bobbin completely out of its casing and remove any dust or threads.
Then put the bobbin or a new one back in. Completely rethread the machine too. Also be sure you are using either bobbin thread or the same weight as your sewing thread
Good luck.
It could be a problem with the tension of your machine. My quilter friends say to re-thread your machine. You could read your manual to make sure you are threading your machine correctly. It might be time to bring your machine to a professional and get it checked out and clean. I hope you can get some help from a professional , have it cleaned and checked out. Best of luck and happy sewing to you. Sandy Story
I am staying at home and would love to help.
I would love to help make mask I live in Whittier CA. I have tons of cotton fabric and sewing machines I went on site and can’t find the elastic. How can I get elastic to start making these mask to donate?
It’s been said that you are better off using binding material or ribbon instead of elastic. It can fit more snugly!
Try using rubber bands as well.. I’ve been making masks using rubber bands for over a year now
You can making your own binding type or ribbon type from the same fabric and make ties that tie behind the head.
Instead of making out of elastic, make it out of fabric. Then they tie it behind their heads. That is what they are doing in Washington State.
I started sewing mask today for local hospital. I used up most of my on hand supplies and the local store have no supplies? I could use some help in Delaware
My name is Jody Baehler. I am a HS/MS FACS teacher in Deerfield, KS. I’m currently spending my time at home making masks for the hospital, our schools that are doing meals, and for the elderly in my community as well as my home town. I’m using my personal stash of fabric, and I have purchased enough Pellon and elastic for 150 masks. Any supplies that you could give at a discounted price would be greatly appreciated.
I would love to help!
I’m staying in due to the Virus.

Ideas shared for elastic shortage include the elastic headbands available in dollar tree and dollar general stores.
I’m staying at home with my babies right now and have lots of friends and family who work in hospitals. I’m constantly hearing about the shortages. I’d love to help with making masks to help out. I live by 3 hospitals: St. Mary’s Hospital, Victor Valley Community Hospital, and Desert Valley Hospital. I’m also 35 min from Loma Linda where my aunt and cousins work.
I would like to help..please let me know what I can do.
As an employee of joann I’d like to make it known that some of your information is wrong. Not all stores are open to the public due to many shelter in place and disaster orders. People are still flocking to the store despite being told to stay home. Stores are running out of elastic and supplies quickly. The employees are the ones making the kits and sending out online orders. As much as it’s appreciated that everyone wants to help…STAY THE FVCK HOME.
I would love to make as many masks as I can for our local hospital. Is there a link we can go to go over the fabric? Or do we just go to the regular website?
You don’t get a choice in the fabric. Employees just cut a select amount and have some kits ready. First come first serve. Think about dipping into your fabric stash first if you want to help!
I’m ready to help the heros in the medical field! I have sewing machines and will help out. Please send info.
How about you not be vulgar when people are trying to find a way to help. You need to be a better representation of your company and use better words.
As a employee of JoAnn’s I think you shouldn’t cuss at the end of a very sound post it makes the company look bad and is not professional
With your language I will not be wanting to shop with you. Joann invited people to come in to help her help the medical staff. I am staying at home, your language is not necessary. It voids her offer of goodwill.
My name is Betty Hall I can sew and am currently making masks for our local hospital. Elastic is hard to find. I’m interested in the precut fabric and necessary supplies to continue making these masks for our medical personnel. The state college location is closest to me. I’m in Howard pa.
Hi Betty, I am making masks from home as well, and have a limited supply of elastic. I have started making fabric ties to attach to the mask instead of elastic. I thought fabric would survive multiple washings better than elastic and is more size-adjustable. Just a thought. I hope its helpful for you.
A friend said you can use the elastic head bands you find @ Dollar Tree ☺️ Cheap ❣️
Etsy has elastic. Search USA elastic in Etsy.com.
