Heather Palmer

I am 26 years old and I am married to the love of my life. No, we don't have kids yet, but yes we are talking about it. I consider myself to be a tough nerd, but I cannot deny that I am a nerd. I love curling up with a good book (Harry Potter) or a good movie (Harry Potter) and just getting lost in this whole other world that a writer has created. Reading was always my escape to a world where maybe the rules don't apply and where anything could happen. The joy that I felt after reading a great book was something that I wanted to share with others, which made me fall in love with writing as much as reading.

I am currently working just as a caregiver for my husband, Victor, who is a veteran. I am appointed through the VA to help him with all his health care needs, inside and outside of the doctor's office. I most recently worked as a pharmacy technician for the past few years, but now I am focusing on being a caregiver as well as going back to school.

My Husband Doesn’t Like GoT, And Now I Don’t Know Who I Married…

Let me start off by saying I love my husband and I am so lucky to have found this great man. Now that I got that out of the way, I can start my story. I am almost as much a movie/TV fanatic as I am an obsessed book lover (notice the word almost), so …

10 Ways To Avoid Being A Bull In A China Shop

When I was 12, if anyone had called me “Grace”, it would have been entirely ironic. I was as klutzy as a newborn giraffe and literally broke every single thing I touched. I never got better. Over the years, I have come to terms with my personal lack of coordination, but there are certain things …

Stop Putting Celebrities On Pedestals!

Why do we hold celebrities to a higher standard than we do ourselves? I mean, if they were politicians, then I would understand how their decisions can be detrimental to their careers. That line of thinking makes sense to me; it is rational because they have influence over our lives. Do celebrities have any influence …

Stepchildren Are The Children Of Your Heart…

If you are a stepparent then you can completely understand what I mean when I say that being a stepparent isn’t something everyone can accomplish successfully. To be honest, I am not sure if I can even say that I am a successful stepmom, especially when I feel like I can always be better. In …

Veterans Still Fall Through The Cracks, And Here’s What You Need To Know

I cannot express enough how disheartening it is to hear straight from a healthcare professional that “sometimes patients get lost in the system.” My husband and I are frequent flyers when it comes to being in the hospital, at the doctor’s office, at a lab, or at the “lovely” VA hospital here in Phoenix. As …

Sometimes The Animal You Never Wanted Becomes The Companion You Always Needed

Believe me when I say that I never thought the words “I own a hedgehog” would EVER come out of my mouth and I am still shocked. My husband has wanted one for years and when we went to visit my sister-in-law, to my surprise, she had two hedgehogs and the female was pregnant. I …

Turns Out I’m A Millennial, And I Reject That Notion!

Yeah, so the generation of cell phone addicts that I have been making fun of for the last eight months or so? Turns out that I am one of them. I debated never telling a living soul (other than my husband who was with me when we found out), but then I realized my embarrassment …

Now That Christmas Is Over, Can I Please Have My Mental Breakdown?

I literally counted down the hours until Christmas was finally over because I was on the verge of a complete breakdown. Like full on Dionne in Clueless type breakdown! Now That Christmas Is Over, Can I Please Have My Mental Breakdown? I did have a meltdown the day after Christmas and it was pretty ugly. I …

The Stress Of Being A Christmas Procrastinator…

Now, it may not seem like a habit that requires professional help, but shopping in December can be just as overwhelming as last minute Thanksgiving day shopping. Every single store is jam-packed with annoying people like me and it is always a fight to get to the section you need to (especially if you’re a …

Men Never Really Let Go Of Their Inner Child, So Why Should I?

As a 27 year old, it is safe to classify myself as an adult, since my frontal lobe has full developed and all that crap that happens when you’re over 25. One thing is for sure, I never thought this is where I would be at this age, but most of all I thought that …

The Invisible Wounds Of A Veteran Through The Eyes Of A Loved One

Let me start by saying I am married to an amazing man (whom I love to death) who willingly put his life on the line for his country to protect his home, his family, and the freedoms we so carelessly take for granted. During his time in the army, he saw some pretty unspeakable horrors, …

I’m Black, My Husband Is White, Quit Staring Already!

It seems like everywhere my husband and I go, people stare at us. At first I might have passed it off as there must be something on my face or in my teeth, I eventually came to my senses and realized it wasn’t that simple. I guess the reason why people couldn’t remember that staring …

Confession: I’m Less Stressed When I’m In School…

The end of the summer means Netflix binges have to come to a close and it’s time to enroll in classes for the fall. I feel excited and anxious at the same time; glad that structure will return to my days, even if it limited my free time. My mind constantly races, thoughts flying by …

My Pap Smear Came Back Positive, And Here’s What Happened…

About eight months ago, a week after my annual pap smear, I got a call from my OB/GYN’s office. They wanted me to come in and talk to my doctor about the results of my pap. Normally, I was given a code to call a mailbox and get my results that way. I asked them …
